CHAINSAW OPERATION, SOME HINTS AND TIPS AND SAFTY ADVISE Always wear ear, eye and rest of body protection. Have someone with you when using a chainsaw. If anything goes wrong they can help or get help for you. Start the chainsaw on the ground with the chain brake on, when it starts release the set throttle by pulling and releasing trigger, allowing motor to idle. Release the chain brake. The chain should not move while motor is idling. If it is, back off the idle screw a little. With chain brake on and motor running test the brake by pulling throttle trigger and releasing. If chain doesn't move, it's working. Never touch the chain while the motor is running. Test the auto-oiling of the bar and chain by running the chainsaw at half throttle with chain brake off. With the chainsaw sitting on the ground and the nose of the bar about 30 cm from a block of wood, a spray of oil should be seen on the wood after about 15 sec. When walking with the chainsaw motor running always apply the chain brake. When cleaning up fallen timber start cutting the smaller branches first and other branches that are not higher than head height. Watch for branches that will close on the chainsaws bar as they are cut, they may need to be cut from the bottom up. If the saw jams in a cut turn off the saw and get some help. Depending how badly jammed the bar is will determine what kind of help is needed. It may take a second person to move the end of the branch. It may require levering the log with a bar or piece of timber, jacking, pulling of the log with a vehicle or a lift under the log with a tractor or suitable machine. If it's not safe or possible to hold the saw from falling when released and it could be damaged in a fall, remove the power head from the bar and chain first. KICKBACK: Never cut or touch the timber with any part of the nose of the chainsaws bar. KICKBACK occurs when the teeth traveling around the end of the bar grab or hit the wood. This will suddenly throw the nose of the bar upward towards your face or head. Always start a cut well back from the end of the bar. Do not allow the chain when sawing to come in contact with small blocks or loose sticks of wood. The chain may grab and throw them. They can hurt! Keep your working area clear as you go, removing anything you could trip over.
These are just a few safety tips to consider when using a chainsaw. I cannot stress enough the importance of following all the safety advice you can get about using chainsaws.
